5 Movies to See Before Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman

Honorable Mentions:

Daniel Day-Lewis in Age of Innocence
  • Age of Innocence – Martin Scorsese’s beautifully told story of love and regret. It is wonderfully crafted and by the end, you are left feeling the sadness and loss that Newman’s Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) feels. It is constantly overlooked in Scorsese’s legendary filmography and makes a great companion to The Irishman.
Robert De Niro in Once Upon A Time In America
  • Once Upon A Time In America- Sergio Leone’s American epic; an ambitious telling of greed, friendships, and relationships through the lives of gangster friends. As the story progresses throughout the decades, we see ‘Noodles’ (Robert De Niro) age. The audience then begins to regret and question the bond and loyalty that he and his friends once had. The many similarities between this film and The Irishman are uncanny.
Johnny Depp and Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco
  • Donnie Brasco– Another true crime story following men who bond and become incredibly close only to have one betray the other. It’s one of Pacino’s finest performances and he plays gangster ‘Lefty’ with poignancy as he faces his harsh reality.
