5 Movies to See Before Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman

Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro in Casino

Before The Irishman, this was the last collaboration between Scorsese, De Niro and Pesci. Together, they tell their version of Paradise Lost. Scorsese shoots this film with his usual high energy and in an operatic fashion. Gangsters, Ace (De Niro) and Nicky (Pesci), were gifted the ultimate playground of Las Vegas from mob bosses back home. They ruled Vegas with might and the dollar; however, their ego, pride, and greed ultimately got in their way and the collapse of their rule followed. They were given everything, they had more than enough at their disposal; until, more simply wasn’t enough.

Why you should watch it: In my undergrad at UNLV, I took a class about the history of gaming and Las Vegas. So naturally, I asked my professor after the first day of class how accurate was Casino. He let out a small chuckle and stated: “Easily 95 percent.” Like The Irishman, it’s American history we don’t typically learn in school.
