Mad Max: Fury Road is Furiously Fantastic

It was over 35 years ago when writer-director George Miller introduced the world to Max Rockatansky, who you might know by the name of Mad Max. The cynical drifter was originally played by Mel Gibson and first appeared in the 1979 Australian movie titled after the character. Mad Max, grossed significantly at the box office and eventually became the first of a trilogy, being followed by two films: Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond Thuderdome. The entire series met critical and financial success so it’s no surprise that three decades later, George Miller has brought Mad Max back to the big screen in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max: Fury Road follows Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) who unintentionally joins a rebel named Furiosa (Charlize Theron), in a mission to return to her childhood homeland.

Mad Max: Fury Road is not only the best movie from the Mad Max series, not only is it the best film I’ve seen this year, it is one of the greatest action movies I’ve seen—ever. This is one of those films that I couldn’t wait to write about, but deep down I know, no matter what I write, it will never fully explain how truly powerful this movie is. Now, hopefully I’m a good enough writer that I can at least come close. Fury Road is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my journey through cinema. It was something I’ve never experienced before and doubt I will ever experience again. The two hours that I sat in that theater, on edge of my seat while my hands latched to the armrests, I was filled with joy and excitement that I haven’t felt in a long time. I was transformed into a kid; experiencing an action movie for the first time and even now, days later, that rush of excitement is still alive in me.

Now, that might sound a bit over the top, but I promise it is no exaggeration. It was like the action genre was reinvented for those two hours, trust me this is something that needs to be seen to be understood. It’s filled with wall to wall action that will have you picking your jaw off of the floor. From the moment Max meets Furiosa, and a fight ensues, you know you are about to see something special. Mad Max: Fury Road offers incredible action sequences that will stay in your head for years to come. It’s so creative and fresh, that the next time someone tells you that movies aren’t original anymore, tell them to see this and they’ll willingly recant their statement. From the impeccable score from Junkie XL, to the exhilarating vehicular violence, this movie is everything and more. It will be the new standard for you when you see another action film, you’ll say, “But it was no Fury Road.”

All of this and I’ve yet to mention the costume and production design or the stunning visual style. This is not only one of the most energetic movies as of this year, it is also the most gorgeous. Miller and his crew take the audience into a world that we’ve never been to, and never want to leave. Everything about this movie looks and feels right. It just works in perfect harmony and, when I say harmony, I mean ass-kicking excitement. I guess the best way to describe it, is unreal. Again, this is a movie you experience, you feel in a theater seat. Don’t wait for Redbox or Blu-Ray, go experience Miller’s masterpiece.

Mad Max: Fury Road is the best movie I’ve seen all year, up to this point, and one of the greatest action movies ever made. The action, the visual style, and production design will just drive you mad.
