12 Strong Is a Weak War Movie

My biggest issue with 12 Strong, “the declassified true story of the horse soldiers,” is that it never feels likes a true story. It instead feels like stilted, tacky, and heartless attempt at a war picture.

For instance, there is plenty of “the warrior is in the heart” talk and dialogue that feels like it belongs in an installment of The Karate Kid or Rocky.

That probably wasn’t the intention of Danish filmmaker Nicolai Fuglsig, but 12 Strong feels more like a campy action-movie rather than a serious, war-drama.

The movie tells the story of a dozen Army Special Forces (“Green Berets”) who are deployed into Afghanistan after 9/11. The group is ordered to work with a local warlord to strike down the Taliban, forcing them out of the country.

In 2010 author Laura Hillenbrand, who famously wrote Seabiscuit: An American Legend in 2001, introduced readers to Louis Zamperini in her non-fiction book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. Hillenbrand’s biography told the incredible story of the Word War II survivor and Olympic athlete. It earned critical acclaim and landed on the New York Times Best Seller list. Nearly four years later, Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie will be directing the adaptation.

The film follows Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt) and his tank brigade during World War II. The crew includes, Boyd “Bible” Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Grady Travis (Jon Bernthal), Trini “Gordo’’ Garcia (Michael Peña), and the newest addition Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman) who has only been in the army eight weeks. Now, Collier and his men must teach Norman, “War never ends quietly.”
